bread and wine, shauna niequist's new book! check it.

"One of the most important things my mom taught me--
or really, is teaching me over and over even now--is that
the best is yet to come.
------------------
"She teaches me, through her words and her actions, that if you take the next right step,
if you live a life of radical and honest prayer,
if you allow yourself to be led by God's Spirit,
no matter how far from home and familiarity it takes you,
you won't have to worry about what you want to be when you grow up.
Why?
Because you'll be too busy living a life of passion and daring."

boy was i excited to get the newest shauna niequist book!
considering how much i loved her other two books
i knew i was in for a treat.
so i began reading.
when there were lulls in the carpool to 4K
when i had some moments to myself in a special room of the house
when i was waiting for a tardy piano student...
during the kiddo's read/rest time
and at the mcdonald's playland over spring break.

the thing i appreciate about shauna's writing is her vulnerability.
she writes some things i'll bet a lot of us think and never admit to.
each chapter is short,
making it perfect for a mama who only gets brief moments of peace.
each chapter is a little treasure of a story,
a tale from her adventure of a life.

----------------------------------------------------------------

one of the challenges placed before us early readers of her book
was to blog about a food that we prepared from her newest book,
bread and wine.
(most of the chapters end with a recipe,
many of them being GF.  can i get a wootwoot from my GF peeps!)

i'm always up for a challenge.
i've tried quinoa before and was inspired by it's uniqueness.

so one morning when the kids were least expecting mom to break out
a breakfast that didn't include cereal or poptarts...
a morning when my nephew was added to the bunch at the table
(does that count as a gathering?!)

i made shauna's breakfast quinoa.

{  i assembled the following: }
quinoa (1 c quinoa and 2 c water) cook acc'd to pkg
chicken apple sausage, sliced and heated with minced onion
eggs, cooked until yoke is only slightly liquidy and lay on top quinoa
{ are you jealous of my awesomesauce egg circles? }

salt and pepper to taste.
 *as the author suggests, i made this recipe "my own"
so please see her book for the original version
the quinoa was eaten.
and elements were traded among the brothers
and charity, in her hot morning mess,
was slightly confused by her mama's craycray messy kitchen...
{ given that anything more exciting than instant oatmeal for breakfast
is really only to be had when daddy's home in the A.M. }

but breakfast quinoa was made, served, consumed,
and a lively breakfast table was created.

{ i really want to try her breakfast cookies next......}

in her book, shauna urges us to gather those we love around
our table.  or our living room.

to "throw open your front door
and welcome the people you love
into the inevitable mess with hugs and laugher."

i do that.
i love doing that.
do you?

i read a comic recently that said,
'just add an egg to my floor
and you can make a casserole with the crumbs you find'

yep.  i'm pretty much in that season.
i've had friends come over and comment how
clean my house was
and i've had friends come over and trip over toys,
clean off some items at my kitchen table to have a seat,
and ask where i kept the toilet paper as it was missing from the roll.

here's the thing:
in shauna's new book, bread & wine,
she shares stories of gatherings in all kinds of settings.
and it was all sweet in some way.
because of the people and the life that is shared.

i love that.
i love her stories and the artistically crafted way she writes.
i found, as with her other books
special nuggets of truth found in God's Word
lived out in practical ways.

the book challenged me and encouraged me to live life
fully connected to others.
that's how God created us to live.

thanks, shauna, for another treasure of a book!

 the book is now released
{ eeep! }

have a wonderful day, ya'll!

shauna niequist's {NEW} book...i've got it (and random)

warning:  this is a random post.
filled with some pictures.
{ not of people.}
well, one of me.....ummm......
but most people pics these days have been on my new ipad
(YAY)
which i'm still learning to us and have no idea
how to get pics from there to here....
--------------------
a lot's been happening in these parts,
{ but more on that later }

here's a little randomness.....
and some fun news
i made these pics awhile ago
inspired by romans 12:12
and pinterest.
it involves scribbling (fun)
temporarily attaching stencils (ohmercy)
and spray-painting on top (messy)
and removing stencils (wallah)

but the real story involves a couple nights ago
when the hubs and i were chatting about life and stuff....
(nothing major, just stuff.....'waiting' kinda stuff)
ANYways.....

all of a sudden
the patient in afflication sign
fell. off. the. wall.
just like that!
in the middle of the chat.
justin was not nearly as moved by that as i was
but i'm all about situational irony and such.

some friends have been spurring me on
via a facebook page called WORD Challenge
to memorize verses twice a month,
beginning and mid month.

great stuff.
as one of them pointed out,
when you're memorizing Scripture
you're focusing on each and every word.
yep.
i tend to be a "glance overer" if i'm not careful.
and memorization kicks that right on out of me.

funny how the little phrase
"let your gentleness be evident to all" can really rock your world
if you let it.
{and i have....and......oh, my}

caringbridge brings people together,
albeit under sad conditions.
i've been so inspired by the faith of a couple in our congregation
whose daughter is fighting for life.
the poetic words of a trusting dad who knows his girl
is being held by the Lord in this time.

the slow healing of this teen girl,
the two steps forward, one step back journey towards recovery
the steadfastness of God every step of the way...

dear Jesus, please uplift this family
give them amazing peace during this time
and heal makayla's body for Your glory.

right now on my table there are
flowers to brighten up the gloom that is february....
thankful for the small things.
as i have mentioned (ahem) i have a glorious new ipad.
and i have a Bible app.
but there is just something about the pages to turn,
the highlighting and underlining that can be done,
and the tears that can stain the pages of a bulky Bible.

{ amen? }

february (and january)
and half of march.....
crazyness.

it's sad when you hope for another snow day
and you loathe snow as i do.

but here's something to make any
winter-haters day.....

(drum roll, please)

okay, so this slightly obnoxious pic of me
includes a copy of the book,

but not just any copy,
an 'advance readers' copy.

{ yep. }

soooo excited!
i'm going to read up this book
and tell you all about it here on my blog.

{ so.... }
you can get excited, too
and then go out and buy it now or when it officially comes out.
SOON!

have you ever read

check it out, you all.

and have a super
(snowy, perhaps) day!

sweeeet.

a rowdy new year's celebration with some extended fam
to ring in the New Year
is nothing compared to the rowdy found when you coop up
4 kids in a van for 4 hours
on your way to peoria, il

where these 2 get all dressed up
(awwwww!)

in fact, the whole fam does......

to celebrate the exciting wedding of these 2
aka Mr and Mrs Dunham
(congrats, guys!)
the same weekend the parents of the fam
introduce the kiddos to one of their fav restaurants,
joe's crab shack

and our vacation weekend gets extended by the cross fam

who unexpectantly have us over for the night and
teach us the wonderful new game of carcassonne
(love them, love this game, love sandi's nespresso machine....fun, fun times)
For girl's night in little lovely lady talks her mama into hot pink pedis
and sparkle nails.  For both of them.....

because the mama knows these days won't last forever
along with the notes her boys still let her slide into lunch boxes
{ sigh... }

Upwards basketball interests a new member of the James fam
as lucky #13,  Caleb James,  takes the court
(go Bobcats!)

and Big Papi takes on a coaching role for team Thunder
as a star player, a one Jonathan James, scores some baskets for sure.
GO TEAM.
Sometimes Matthias gets to eat Scooby Doo
overpriced Campbell's soup in front of the tv watching a fav show
on an incredibly discusting blustery day in WI.
(sometimes, though that doesn't stop him from asking everyday.....)

These beautiful flowers are what Justin knows Laurie loves
and they brighten yucky winter days.
This is what makes Justin a stellar, over-the-top wonderful husband
{ in Laurie's  humble opinion.....}
well, that, and his patient lego-building skillz with the kiddos.
That's pretty hot, too......
and this whole Daddy/Daughter thing is absolutely,
positively a heart melter.
Charity's pouring some hot orange juice right there
{so don't be thinkin it's tea y'all....}
The candy jar has been emptied of candy canes and filled with starbursts
so now we're ready for 2013 to begin sweetly.

{ so bring it on. }

Thank You, Jesus, for the sweet gift of everyday.
And the even sweeter gift of family to share it with.
